Load Ubuntu as an application

Asked by dcannell

I've tried loading Ubuntu (8.04 LTS) and Kubuntu (latest also) on two different XP systems.

The Ubuntu loaded OK and made it through the reboot but the only .exe file (wubildr.exe) I've found that looks like it should run fails with a message from the 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem that says;

D:\ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0ea3 IP:44f9 OP:9d 61 07 1f fa Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

On another XP system (brand new, just loaded with XP and SP3) the Kubuntu wouldn't even load.

Thanks, Dave Cannell

Hey Dave,

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble installing Ubuntu. From what I see (correct me if I'm wrong), you're trying to install Ubuntu using wubi from Windows.

Using Wubi does install Ubuntu without requiring you to re-partition your drive as it uses your existing file systems (D:\Ubuntu in your case). However, it does not allow you to run Ubuntu from windows. In order to run Ubuntu, you'll have to chose that option in the boot menu that appears when you restart your computer.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,

Nicolas
