Installation problem with 6.06 - gets hung up at step 5 of 6

Asked by James Kim

When I boot up my computer (Intel Pentium IV with 256 Mb RAM) using the Ubuntu 6.06 "Live" CD, the installation process freezes at step 5 of 6. Currently I have Windows XP on the hard disk but the hard disk is partitioned only half; 40 GB in NTFS format. The other 40 GB is in FAT32 format.

Before (when I did not have Windows XP on the hard disk) I tried all three options - erase entire hard disk, use available free space, and manually partition disk - at step 5 of 6 and each time, the installation freezes. I also tried the different combinations beforehand, of erasing the entire hard disk (using the Seagate hard disk CD), formatting it as FAT32, and manually partitioning it using the FDISK command (creating "/" directory, SWAP directory, and "/usr" directory). None of these work.

Any help would be appreciated.

I downloaded the alternate Ubuntu 6.06 from the website and burned it on CD and it was okay after that.
