How did you try to change them? Normally you would open up system - prefs - appearance and then choose a theme and click customize and then the icon tab. Is that what you did? I think some of the default themes have very similar looking icons. If you download new icon packs from something like gnome-look.org, be sure they are properly installed (often by just dragging them to the appearance window if they are packaged right). It's also possible that an icon pack doesn't have folder icons - though that would be a bit odd. What icons are you trying to use? Do you have a link?

Which icons are you trying to use? Is there a name for them? I'm not aware of any bug in 8.04 with respect to icons. Does this problem exist with just one specific set of icons or with many different ones?

They are a set of Vista icons. In 8.04 it does not change the folder icon even if I use any other icon set. Even if I apply mac icons it does not work.

By vista or mac icons do you mean icons that look like that and are packaged for use with ubuntu or are you trying to use actual vista or mac icons? If they are not packaged for ubuntu (i.e. in a tar.gz file) then it will probably be a manual process. I have tried about 5 or 6 different sets of icons in Hardy and none of them had any problems. Other than an issue with the type of icons or how they are packaged, I can't think of any reason why some would change but not others.

I am having the same problem as you are. I applied the (nueve-xt or nuevo-xt) icon theme from gnome-look on ubuntu 8.04 and the folders do not display the correct Icons. The answer might be that it is not following the gnome standards and the new version of gnome requires strict compliance. Here is what I found searching the internet. The solution may be renaming the files/folders in the theme to follow the standard.

Try downloading the nuevo 2.2 icon pack from here http://

The download above did not work. Try the one from gnome-look.
