What Programs are compatible with Ubuntu

Asked by Maslan817

I want to download Ubuntu, but I am not sure if all the programs I want/need are compatible with it. Here is a list of what I am looking for:

AOL Instant Messenger
Microsoft Office 2007/ 2003 either one
Mozilla
Bitdefender Antivirus, Norton Antivirus, whatever one
Bit Comet/Bittorrent/ Ares

I also wanted to know if you guys had any suggestions with certain programs to help keep my hard drive in order once I install Ubuntu

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. There is Gaim (for Ubuntu) or Kopete (for Kubuntu) that provides support for chat with those who have AOL Messenger.
2. Openoffice.org is compatible with Microsoft Office 2003 (at least).
3. Mozilla is available for Linux (I guess you need the Mozilla Suite, or its successor, Seamonkey).
4. You don't really antiviruses, but there is some support. ClamAV is available with graphical frontends both in Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
5. There are many Bittorent clients available for Linux, e.g. Azureus, or others as well.

I hope this helped.

1. Agreed, GAIM does work for AOL IM and is pre-installed.
2. Agreed OpenOffice.org is great.
3. Mozilla Firefox is pre-installed on Ubuntu.
4. Not needed. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10/06/linux_vs_windows_viruses/ is an interesting article about why.
5. There is a gnome-bittorrent which is very basic but works well, Azureus is functionally very rich, but also a bit bulky to run. See this page:-

Yea that help a lot, thanks.

Are there any other programs or suggestions that you guys think i would need to make it work even better?

What about the program Memturbo? Will that work with Linux

P.S.- I'm a PC user never owned, used, or touched a Mac, just looking for a different user interface and a decent learning experience without causing a disaster within my computer

- and if I want to reinstall windows afterwards because I do not like something that is possible, correct?

I have never used Memturbo, but from looking at the website it is a Windows-only application which *allegedly* improves performance. You won't need it.

Yes, you can remove Ubuntu and put Windows back if you don't like/want it.

Alright guys thanks a lot for the help. Here is the final question, are there any suggestions of programs that you think I should download to get the best experience?

Arguably you already have that :)

I'd say get used to the products that are already installed. Then when you come across an article about another product you can make an objective comparision of the features based on your own experience.

Of course I love Ubuntu linux, and have a great time using it each day, but if I told you which apps I use they may not be appropriate for your use. There may be features that you need in another product that I don't, so it would be pointless me telling you what I use.

What might be useful though is making your way through the desktop guide - linked below - and see if anything stands out that you might want to do with your new operating system.

Follow links do desktop guide above.
