Compatibility of structural engineering FEM software with Ubuntu...Is it here yet?

Asked by ENGINEERING ANALYTICS

I need information from structural engineers involved with GNU/Linux Ubuntu and running popular structural engineering FEM software under Ubuntu 8.04. Does it work seamlessly yet (or at least as well as Windows XP SP2)? Specifically, I want to know if any of you SE(s) are running IES VA 6.0 under Ubuntu?

You want to run windows software on Ubuntu right ?

Just to make it clear: Linux and Windows are totally different system and Linux (Ubuntu) does not support windows application.
There is however a project called Wine will tries to implement the windows API so that you can run Windows application on Linux.
Wine is a really nice piece of software and work for quiet a few Windows application but it really is far from perfect.

There is a database that will help you know how well an application will perform under wine: http://appdb.winehq.org/

If you really need 100% compatibility with Windows application you will probably want to use Windows or run Windows in a virtual machine.
Virtual Machine are useful however it will run slower and you'll need to install windows in it (meaning you need a box version of windows)
