Hardy Printing Problems

Asked by Leorick

Hello,

It's been 5 days since i downloaded and installed Xubuntu 8.04 on this home PC that i use as a print server. It's a great distro, easier to use than my previous experience with Fedora Core 4, that was way back. Everything is working great on this slow but sturdy machine except for my printing problems.

I have 2 printers, and both does not print. Even the test page fails. It will say something like Print Job sent but that's just about it. I'm pretty certain that both printers have the appropriate drivers. No printer activity.

1. HP Photosmart 7260 = this was automatically installed
2. Canon PIXMA IP1000 = there was no driver for this but i downloaded the RPM drivers from canon and coverted them with alien.

I'm really stucked at this problem. I googled a lot of articles already and to no avail. I read something about a May 16 update that some people complain about. apparently, this update interrupted their printing capabilities as well.

I hope someone can help me. Its been days since i tried to solve the problem myself. Its taking a lot of my work time already and i'm close to moving to Fedora 9 out of my desperation, hehehe.

Thanks a lot!

Well the good news is that they do appear to be supported...

HP
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrintersHp

Canon
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrintersCanon

And there is a guy who has repackaged the drivers for the Canon with instructions to install here
http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/#canon

This was for Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon but the modules don't seem to be in 8.04 by default so the link above is worth a shot.

For the record, viewing your current printers is accomplished by
/usr/bin/system-config-printer

Hey Tony,

Thanks for the Info and the reply. I already stumbled upon those articles in my 1 week of trying to solve this printing problem. Up until now, i was not able to print in 8.04 using the guides i found and the drivers that canon released. I was surprised to see canon releasing drivers for linux for their printers.

What i did was downgrade my version to 7.10 and viola, it works. It seems my instinct regarding 8.04 was right.

Thank you for the effort. Thanks!
