How Do I Install a Lexmark Printer?

Asked by taurus

I got a Lexmark x5250 printer and I need to install it in my ubuntu 7.10. I went to linuxprinting.org but I couldn't find a driver for my printer. Any ideas on what I should do?

If I can't install it on my ubuntu, then is it possible to install a windows driver version on my XP guest?

I quickly google for that model and yeah it seem like you're out of look. No Linux driver.

About making it work on a virtual machine... yes it should be possible (I did manage to get my Windows Mobile PDA working when I was on 7.1) but can't guaranty anything.

I used Virtualbox for this. You'll did you to get the proprietary version from the official website. http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
The open source version that is in the repository doesn't support USB.

Also you might need to make some modification to your config file for Virtualbox to access your USB port.
It seem to be well explained in the community documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox (go to the USB section)

Hope it helps !

arekkusu, i finally got my printer set up in xp as guest in my ubuntu. it works very well, considering that it's in virtualbox and not in my ubuntu host. that's another negative for ubuntu. i was actually considering uninstalling ubuntu for xp, believe it or not, this afternoon because of this incompatibility. virtualbox, however, saved ubuntu from being uninstalled from my computer.
