Ubuntu 8.04 Loss of WLAN-connection after some minutes

Asked by thomas.grond

I upgraded from Ubuntu 7.xx to 8.04. As in 7.xx I have the problem, that my WLAN is down after a few minutes. On the same system I have Windows Vista Home (dual boot) and there I have no problem with the WLAN. My system is a HP Pavillon m8000, as a Ubuntu/Linux/Unix-Newby I was not able to figure out the configuration. Any ideas somebody? Thanks a lot in advance.

Could you provide output from the commands "lspci", "lsusb", and "dmesg" when the wireless connection goes down?

This should help someone find a solution.

Dear Andrew

Thank you very much for your quick respone. As Murphy - the famous one - is reading this post as well the WLAN did run for several hours without problem. I hate it when computers do that to me. Could it be that there was some kind of update in ubuntu in the last two days?

In any case I executed the three commands you provided (with running WLAN):

Yeah. I hate it when that happens too. Well, if you get the problem again, take a dmesg output from the terminal and put it up here again. The dmesg after the error occurs should help in finding the issue.

One thing I did notice from your dmesg output is that you lost you wireless connection for a short time around 2 and a half hours from when you turned on your computer. This could be that the wireless adapter just lost it's signal. It picked the wireless network back up, within a few seconds, however.

Must say you've got a good computer there! Quad core 2.4GHz! I should be getting around to upgrading :-)

Thanks a lot for your help, Andrew. Doing Videostuff on a Windows based system needs a lot of power :-) Therefore it seemed sensible to me to get a computer with some juice.
