No audio. Ubuntu 8.04, Dell Inspiron 1420

Asked by Brice Avila

Hello. I'm a newbie. Love my Ubuntu 8.04 Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop except for one irritant: No sound. History:

* When I originally got it with Ubuntu 7.40(?) the sound worked . . . and then one day it didn't. Not sure what changed inbetween.
* When I boot and press F12, the Dell audio diagnostics sound great, leading me to believe that it is not a hardware problem.
* When looking for bugs, etc. I found possible mute bugs that appear to me to be what I am encountering.
* No errors/warnings in dmesg (that I know of, anyway . . . not sure how to read it)

Any help is appreciated. Willing to run further diagnostics, etc. Thanks in advance.
