can i format a flash drive in fatx, and how would i do that?

You can use gparted to create and format partitions on drives (including USB drives)

Make sure it is installed by opening a terminal window (under Applications, Accessories)

sudo apt-get install gparted

Then, with the USB drive already plugged in, type

gksu gparted

You should be able to see all of your drives here but be careful, as you could render your whole system inoperable if you select the wrong drive to format.

There are many formats you can select from to format your USB flash drive
