wiped hard drive, no drivers

Asked by Chris

So I probably made a big mistake, my friend gave me his old computer and I didn't back up anything, I just nuked it. I tried to reinstall Windows XP, and it kind of worked, except when I went to install the needed drivers it kept giving me problems. I've been screwing around with it for the past few days and nothing has worked. So I decided to start over and see if Ubuntu would work any better. Right now I decided to wipe it again (what could it hurt it doesn't have anything on it but XP) and was wondering if there is a simple way to get the drivers I need for Ubuntu. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Yeah, just install Ubuntu it should take care of everything. Linux is not like Windows, a lot of driver are integrated into it.

If after installation you have a problem a problem just come back here and ask :)
(or try google, the forum, the community documentation...)

It seems to be working fine after the installation. However, I am now having a problem with the internet. I know I need to get some firmware for the wireless to work but even when I plug in my ethernet cable I don't get anything. I don't know if I am doing something wrong with setting up the connections or what. I used the dhcp automatic configuration but its not connecting to the internet. Any advice would be appreciated and thanks for the information on the drivers.

I finally got it connected to the internet, but the firmware won't install. I follow the directions here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware, but once i get the the "make" command I get a bunch of errors and it doesn't install. Does anyone have ideas?
