Beryl no longer is used in Ubuntu, and instead compiz-fusion is.
To install:
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Then go to System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings and you can change your visual effects

Just to make it clear. Ubuntu 8.04 has Compiz installed by default. (it's called Desktop effect in the interface)
If you graphic card and the driver are good enough for running the desktop effect it should be enabled by default.

"compizconfig-settings-manager" that was mentioned above is the configuration manager from compiz. It let's you customize compiz.
