New User to Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) - Can't locate device manager

Asked by Stephen Coleman

Hi All,

I'm a new user to UBUNTU (not linux in general, but to Ubuntu). I really like the interface so far. I have a problem. I am running UBUNTU on an older Compaq Armada M700 - it runs perfect and detects everything except the external PCMCIA wireless card. I have a Linksys WPC11 VER. 4 Wireless B adapater (yeah, it's older). I have looked under help, then wireless network troubleshooting. I see the following instructions:
---------------------------------------------
Troubleshooting
This troubleshooting guide is designed to be carried out in order.

Check for device recognition
Open Device Manager (System → Preferences → Hardware Information).

Check to see the hardware is recognised if it is then the section called “Check for driver”

If your device is not displayed then there may be a hardware problem. Ensure if it is PCMCIA or PCI that it is inserted correctly.
---------------------------------------------

My problem is that under SYSTEM ------->PREFERENCES---------->Hardware information
I have NO hardware information listed. I can't find it anywhere under system preferences!

I have admnistrative privileges under my username.

I can't tell which drivers are listed or or installed for this system. Why don't I have access to Device manager? Why can't I see it?

Also, do I need to install NDS Wrapper for my wireless card to make it work? I did the "sudo lshw -C network" command at the terminal window and I see the wireless card listed as well as my ethernet port on the laptop. Where do I go from here? Thanks! Stephen

Try in a terminal window (under Applications, Accessories)

sudo hal-device-manager

That's the same tool as you were trying to find in menus.

It looks from here that your card does work in earlier versions of Ubuntu so fingers crossed ;P

The network manager icon in top right should give you some more information when attempting to set it up.

Hi,

The "sudu hal-device-manager does not work in terminal. Says command not recognized.

Network icon at top right doesn't display anything about the wireless card whatsoever. Any further ideas? I'm trying to locate an .INF file for the device so I can use windows wireless drivers. Thanks. Stephen

you may need to install it first...

sudo apt-get install hal-device-manager

check the spelling of the following line

sudo hal-device-manager

Also, the utility to configure your network connection is network manager which should be sitting in your toolbar in the top right of screen. You can right or left click this to get various configuration options.

I have just done a clean install of hardy ubuntu and have exactly the same problem described above.

When I typed the final resolution above

sudo apt-get install hal-device-manager

I got this in return

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package hal-device-manager

How do I progress from here?

It would appear that hal-device-manager has been replaced by gnome-device-manager, if you do a search in synaptic package manager (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager) you should be able to install it from there. Hope that helps (particularly as its the first time I've been able to offer advice...I must be improving)
