Ubuntu 6.06 Installation Problem

Asked by whill

Hello,
I have a problem Installing Ubuntu 6.06 64 bit. I boot up and I get the installation screen, then I select Install or install with minimal video (or something like that). Either way I hit enter and a list starts to scroll up the screen for a second or two then it just stops and does nothing. Neither the light on my DVD drive or my hard drive light up. It just stops.
The last 2 lines read as follows:
[ 38.223158] <0> kernel panic-not syncing: attempted to kill init!
[ 38.223224]

My system:
ASUS Crosshair MB (590 SLI)
Corsair XMS2 800mhz Ram (2gb)
Nvidia 7600gs video card
AMD 64x2 4800 cpu

I had windows vista 64 but I have erased the partition, but did not format it. Do I need to format? In NTFS or FAT32?
Any ideas on what may be happening?
Thanks,
whill

Ubuntu will take care of all the formatting for you and create an ext3 and swap partition by default.

I would recommend that you try Ubuntu 6.10 instead of installing the older 6.06 and see if the problem persists.

http://releases.ubuntu.com/6.10/

"ubuntu-6.10-desktop-amd64.iso"

If you insist on installing 6.06 and don't minf redownloading you may want to try installing from the alternate 64 bit CD...

http://releases.ubuntu.com/6.06/

"ubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-amd64.iso"

I downloaded the latest iso today and tried installing on virtual PC 2007 running on Vista Ultimate RC1. Irrespective of my graphic choices, the install reaches a stage where the screen becomes unreadable except for the largest fonts.
I should mention here that I sucessfully installed Mandrake 8.2 the only snag there being the sound, which given time I should sort out.

I wanted to ty Ubuntu because it "should" be more up to date, support flash etc.

A solution would be appreciated.

I have couple of PC's that I have built. I have been running winNT on them without problems. I needed to change OS because NT doesn't do anything except make me mad. I have downloaded UBUNTU 6.06@6.10.
I have tried to install them on either system and the same thing happens, the install looks great and then the machine just stops. CD runs and runs but nothing happens. I checked the cd integrity through the start menu and both versions were ok. Both systems are the same, P3's 900mhz, 20gighd, 256ram. I am not a techi, I am learning. I have had no problems in the past building pc's. Problem that I have now is that an OS from MS cost 250$+(for one machine). I can Buy a New Dell or any other pc with software loaded for 400$. I want to use the old stuff I have. If this was the wrong place to ask these questions of UBUNTU users I am sorry. help!

I found the latest releases of Ubuntu problematical as well. I would ask
what purpose you want to use your legacy machines for before recommending a
distro. I would recommend Mandriva in particular, but nowadays you have to
pay. This applies to most established Linux distro's. It is not extortionate
and does give support to new users. Linux is definitely not for someone
looking for ease of use. Dealing with kernels and device installation can
be a royal pain. An OEM version of XP Home can be had for $60 I would
recommend you go for that.
After Windows NT. XP will install all your devices or lead you to correct
solutions with much more ease than a "free?" operating system.

Mikekoi, Scott,

Could you start your own support request, as having more then one problem per support request adds confusion to the situation.

WHill,

Have you tried 6.10?

Best Regards,

Sorry Scott, I thought I was respoding to a personal email not directly connected to the forum. I had no intention of confusing you.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies. Sorry I haven't responded sooner, I had some tests at school this week. I solved the problem by installing Ubuntu 6.10 64bit. I tried all Ubuntu 6.10 installs 32bit, 64bit, servers and alternate 6.10 versions. they all installed without a hitch. They seem to recognize hardware configs better than 6.6 does.

The ALTERNATE versions seem to ask more questions about configuration during install as they seem to be for oem installs.

Good Luck and Thanks to all.

I too am venturing into the land of Linux and am trying to install either 6.06 or 6.10 on a Dell e510 w/ an add-in ATI x800 XL PCI-e card and nogo. Both builds install fine into VMware (pseudo hardware, it *should* install ok) but either in video safe mode or normal, the startup hangs. I don't even get to the "Live CD" environment of Ubuntu 6.x

I see the suggestion to install 64 bit but the distro is slanted towards AMD (Intel dual-core here baby). Curious to get further thoughts or suggestions as I'm downloading and trying 64 bit distro.

Ha, seems logical but had to see for myself. Get a nice little message....

"This is not an amd64 machine. Please install the i386 distribution of Ubuntu._"

Only found this on Dell's site where another person had a problem w/ e510 but not sure of video card type. Safe VGA mode didn't work for him/her either. Starting a new support request as this one kicks off w/ 64 bit direction and listed as solved so unsure of traffic.
