is there a way to reset hardy to new install after playing with it without full reinstall

Asked by Kev

I have been playing with Hardy since beta release and have had a great time doing so. I was ( note was) a XP user and duel boot now only for professional drafting reasons. Each time I get to a point where I feel that I have bungled or botched or tweaked too much I have done a full reinstall. ( yes it's the XP user in me a clean slate makes me feel better) I guess my question is

"Is there a way I can reset all the settings to default.... like software sources... and minise the software I have installed using terminal commands seen on this great help launchpad? something like a purge I guess Or do still have to do a full install with reformatting the drive it is on. I know it is a bit of a silly question but at least I'm a convert regardless of the answer:)

OK first lets get down to the problem

From now onwards,

uncheck everything but official Canonical-supported packages in the "Manage Repositories" and "Software Sources" section..

and change the download server to "Main Server".

and do a sudo apt-get update

and that should make it minimal

This link has nice info on system restore:

Thanks you... I have these as extras on top of archive.canonical/ubuntu hardy partner

wine.sourceforge.net/apt/binary
wine.sourceforge.net/apt/source
packages.medibubuntu.org/hardy free no-free
packages.medibubuntu.org/hardy free no-free ( source code)
wineHQ-ubuntu 8.04 hardy Heron

I also use the mirror.internode.on.net/pub/ubuntu/ubuntu server as I found it quicker for my area for downloads I found the main Australian one and main server use to pause for quite a while sometimes... I guess it is always very busy.
thanks for links... all good advice, I love this place... I have lernt so much even by just looking at the questions being asked and the answers.
