Have you extracted the files from the .tar.bz2 archive? Do this, and also provide the download link so that I can take you through the installation process.

Enter this into a terminal as well:
sudo apt-get install build-essential

I would think RC1 would be available via the normal upgrades before too long. It is best to not try to bypass the package manager to add software - especially if you are fairly new to Linux. However, if you can't wait, try following this:

I extracted it of course. but there's no "configure" file. as well as "make".

If I can install firefox-3.0rc1 by another method, I also want to know how to install .tar.bz2 with the same problem

Like Jim said, it would be best to wait for RC1 to be available as an update, instead of going through the trouble of figuring out how to install it.

Can you help with this problem?
