How to Reinstall 7.10 from CD?

Asked by AshleyS

I just got my new Dell Inspiron 1420 today, with Ubuntu 7.10 pre-installed. I then chose to update to 8.04, but now there are bugs with the sound. After attempting to tweak things manually, I fear that I've made things worse and would like to completely reinstall the 7.10 version. I have the installation CD, but when I insert the disc, there is this prompt:

"A volume with software packages has been detected.
Would you like to open it with the package manager?"

From what I've seen/read on a different forum, there should be a full-screen menu . I also read that I may have to configure the BIOS so that the CD is read correctly, but how do I go about doing that?

Do I need to do anything else in order to reinstall 7.10 from the 8.04?

Thanks for any help!

To reinstall from the CD you need to set in the BIOS to look for the CD first; then you will boot up into the installer disk and can install from there. To get into the BIOS you need to hit esc (or other key, it will tell you--but be quick) and set it there.

Thanks for your reply, but I'm still confused. When exactly do I hit the esc key to get into the BIOS? I tried hitting it at different times while the CD was loading, but the package manager dialogue box just closes.

Once I'm into the BIOS, what exactly do I have to configure?

Hello,

In order to install ubuntu using the CD, you'll need to proceed as follows:
- Insert the CD in your drive
- Reboot the computer

This will make it so your computer boots from the CD and launches the installation from there.

Cheers,

Nicolas

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

To check the actual release type:

cat /etc/lsb-release

To be sure your release is fully upgraded type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

and to upgrade the incoming release

sudo do-release-upgrade

Please give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

If it doesnt work reinstalling ubuntu from live CD

Make sure you have the CD ROM as the first boot priority in the computer

- Insert the CD in your drive
- Reboot the computer

then

open the partition editor (usually in system -> administration sub menu) and delete the previous ubuntu partition by right click and delete option on the ubuntu partition and then do a clean install again)

Ashley,

I have a 1420 also. Here's how you install from the CD:

1. Turn on the laptop
2. Hit the F12 key as it boots (During screen with blue Dell text)
3. Select CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive

This will allow you to reinstall from the LiveCD.

Please report back here and let me know if this solves your question.

Thanks,

Harvey
