The customs dept. asking me to pay fees for Ubuntu cd's

The customs dept. asking me to pay for getting the free ubuntu cd's on post, I am living in India,kerala(state) the problem started one month ago, before that no problem was there,when the cd's arrived i just told them to sent it back. Can anyone help me on this, I am not a person who is able to pay the fees, i am only a student.

Many of us have had similar issue with Customs Department and I believe Canonical and/or Ubuntu have nothing to do with that.

The best thing to do is to approach the customs employee in a friendly way and explain to him/her that this is legal software and it it a FREE software, maybe printing the shipit page would help (it helped once in my case)

Saw a thread a while back with a similar problem - I'm almost positive that was in the same state in India ;)

This is the shipit faq page - near the bottom is a Will I have to pay taxes/duties? section - there is a donloadable letter there as well as an e-mail address as well if you need a personalised letter - they will even fax the customs officials - which I think is prettty good :)
