Xubuntu gives blue screen upon login

Asked by foowg

Hi all,

I have a ubuntu with gnome installed as default (hardy 8.04). Last week I decided to switch to XFCE because my computer doesn't seem to work quite well with gnome and decided that xfce could be better since it uses up lesser resource. I installed via sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop from the Singapore server and everything seems fine till when I logged out of Gnome session and logged into XFCE. It only loads blue screen and a mouse. Nothing else. It takes me a few times pressing ctrl alt backspace back to the log in screen and log back in again before I can see the desktop loaded. How do I solve the problem? What do I need to do in order to make sure that my xubuntu desktop loads upon the first log in?

Thanks in advance!

Hello

How much memory do you have? If it is lower than 192 MB you may want to try the alternate CD.

Firstly,I suggest you check out the download site http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/8.04/release/

Next,Choose a location near you and download the ISO. Then follow the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (Burn your cd at a lower speed say at 4x and check your MD5 sums)

Bit info about MD5 sums:
With an md5 sum you can compare the contents of files. If your .iso file is defect (this can happen when you download it), it's md5sum would be different than that one on the Ubuntu server.

To calculate the md5sum of your image file, you can use a command line tool like http://www.md5summer.org/download.html for Windows (on Ubuntu/xubuntu it's the 'md5sum' command). Then compare the calculated value with the ones in this list http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/8.04/release/MD5SUMS So if you have the xubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso, the calculated value should be 4f398cd35eaf297347f18634a5be5d77

If the file has a different md5sum than expected, I would recommend to download that iso again.

also check the CD for defects

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck

Hope that helps

Bhavani Shankar.
