I have the same thing problem with a Dell Inspiron 1525, Dual Boot Ubuntu 8.04 and Vista. The volume on Vista is fine but on Ubuntu it is not.
I have read all the questions posted regarding low volume, including the Comprehensive guide listed above and have not found a solution.

The only way I can hear anything is to have the volume (Master and Front) set to maximum and then I still have to sit close and be in an environment with NO background noise.

I am not a novice to Unix environments but it was 13 years ago and I have forgotten much.

Would like to know if you found a solution and what it was/is.

Cheers,
V

I have the same problem here,

uname -a
Linux ubuntu-desktop 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:15:37 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lspci -v

00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
Subsystem: ASRock Incorporation Unknown device 0888
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 23
 Memory at febd8000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
 Capabilities: <access denied>

The forum thread mentioned above does not help. I have tried also to follow the intrusctions for 'The perfect Pulse audio setup', another Ubuntu forum thread, but it does not help.

My problem more specifically is that if I set all volumes in alsa-mixer to 100% (in particular PCM and Front), then the sound sounds horrible, it's completly saturated. If I set the volume level between 50% to 70%, then the sound sounds good, but the volume is quite low.

What is strange is that the sound was great until I installed Hardy, and even after installing Hardy it worked well. After an update about a month ago, the sound became horrible and very low. I have tried since to upgrade to the latest version of the Kernel and all other versions available on Ubuntu proposed repository, but nothing helps.

Ludovic
