distributions

Asked by superfantafedera

why the Ubuntu staff does not develop 2 different distros: one for the laptop..the kernel compiled ad hoc for that, and another for desktop PC...of course there will be a third distro for server!
In laptop distros the kernel could be compiled with support for PCMCIA card, micro SD, and other stuff that belong to laptop properly; the most important thing in this distro will be the features for the battery.
The distro dedicated to desktop computer could have kernel much lighter...i don't think that much people had PCMCIA card on his own desktop computer...maybe someone could have infrared...also bluetooth is not so diffused on desktop pc. All that features could be deleted from kernel compilation.
Other possible solution is to choice, during installation process, the features that would be enabled in kernel.

About the server distros i do not have any idea of what will be useful... :-D sorry.. I'm just a simple Linux user.

thanks very much!

bye

..fede!

ubuntu takes the route of trying to support both desktop and laptop computers out of the box, there are problems but with each new version hopefully we get closer to that goal. the only reason the server edition exists is because people have radically different needs from a server setup than a desktop setup.

Can you help with this problem?
