Using SMB share in apt sources.list causes error.

Asked by Zebra-Rake

I want to use my 8.04.iso mounted via an SMB share on my apt sources list. When using https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu for info and instructions, I updated my sources list to include 'deb smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ hardy main restricted' (a valid and accessible smb share on my network). When I reload my sources, I get the following error in a pop up window: " The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/smb could not be found. "

I searched my installed and available packages and the internet, but could not find if I was missing software, or if I did it wrong.

I found one post from 2006 with a person trying to share their DVD across the network for sources, but no one replied.

I just looked at the man file for sources.list and didn't see smb there as a valid URI specification? Did smb get 'dropped' for some reason as a valid way to access repos?

I didn't want to report this as a bug, but I will if you all think it should be.

 Thanks,
  Dylan

Yes, SMB was not listed as a valid URI. I tried that 'file method' but couldn't figure out the correct format for my system, tried it a couple of ways, but the package manager says it can't find that one.

Thanks for the help, should I submit a bug report for this one?

Thanks,
Dylan

Hi,
Thank you! Bug #231806 created.

The bug will no doubt have to go upstream to the Debian folks.

Zebra-Rake,

They have mentioned ways that you can do this if you want. But, may I ask, why would you want to do it this way?

Can you help with this problem?
