Is there an enhancement request in to package up Google Earth?

Asked by Alex Cockell

I noticed above - Google Earth has been put into the Medibuntu libraries - is it likely to be packaged up for base Ubuntu?

Just that I would rather not do things like add libraries to a preinstalled system...

This page - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GoogleEarth?highlight=(google)|(earth) is rather intimidating to a beginner.

I think google earth would require permission from google in order to be packaged in the repositories, for for now the only way is to follow the guide on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GoogleEarth

it should be noted that you do not have to add libraries to your system, you just run the google earth installer, which is provided by google, and it handles everything for you.

Granted... however it's been packaged up for Medibuntu apparently...

Could easily be a non-free package in the same way as Adobe is...

Dunno - just thinking that it's a bit too soon to be mucking about with tarballs and dpkg directly for me...

i would suggest that your next port of call would be talking to the MOTU guys, they package up this kind of stuff. they can be found here: https://launchpad.net/~motu

Umm - I had a look at that site, and it appears directed towards the folks that I would call Application Adders at work.

There doesn't appear to be a process where a basic user like myself could raise an enhancement request - eg I see a Firefox addon I'd quite like, and would like to raise an Enhancement Request to Ubuntu's equivalent of a Release Management team... I then wait patiently, and eventually see it available for addition via Synaptic from the Ubuntu production servers.

I would then simply collect the package and use the app, knowing that any bugs would be fixes, and Update Manager would handle it all for me.

OK - I admit I'm used to corporate IT. And it sounds as though the MOTU people are the OS's equivalent of Release Management...

you can create a brainstorm idea if you want - http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ - but actually talking to the MOTU guys has more chance of this happening

Can you help with this problem?
