Ubuntu uses too much CPU

Asked by tienphivirgo

I'm using Dell 700m running Ubuntu 8.04 and XP dual. I don't know why Ubuntu uses lots of CPU resource. Normally it uses 20-25% of the CPU (hardly ever goes under 20%). But sometimes I don't know the reason why it takes up 95%-100% and my laptop heats up.

I just use some basic software like: firefox, pidgin, skype, gizmo (with visual effect enabled). I tried to disable all the visual effect but it did not work. I also try to expand the swap disk but it did not work too.

Anybody have the same problem with me?

Can you run the System Monitor to see which applications are using that much CPU while idling and when it's doing 95-100% ?

Yeah, I can run System monitor. Now I can see gnome-system-monitor: 16% and everything left is 0%. But when I go to tab Resource the graph shows that I'm using 50-60% CPU.

you need to goto view -> all processes so that you can see all the processes, not just the ones that you are running. one of them should be rather high

Now that I can see Xorg and gnome-system-moitor use about 30%. But graph still show 60%. (I already view all the process)

I experienced also some times a really high CPU usage when I have many tabs open which have a lot flash on them. Maybe you should consider closing them and only keep open the ones you really need. Or think of using some method to deactivate all the flash applets you don't need.

I resolved this issue installing Flash 10:

How to install flashplayer 10 on linux ubuntu

wget http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/flashplayer10_install_linux_051508.tar.gz
tar xvzf flashplayer10_install_linux_051508.tar.gz

sudo mv /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so.orig
sudo mv install_flash_player_10_linux/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/

rm -fr install_flash_player_10_linux
rm flashplayer10_install_linux_051508.tar.gz

Then test your new flash installed version here:

Hope this helps
