install AVG

Asked by Richard

I have downloaded the instructions how to install AVG virus protection from a Ubuntu blog. I have already converted the files from PRM using Debian bases converter as I recall (alien) these file set now waiting to be installed somewhere.

The install instructions I have printed out so that I can follow them line for line are very thorough but to me they are as clear as muddy water!

sudo aptitude install alien libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 python2.4-glade2 python2.4-gtk2 libgtk2.0-dev is but one line of code.

where when how?
How do I get to where and when I arrive there what do I type in when and how and where?

I have the whole article and each and every line but to some one that doesn’t already know how, then how is anyone not already knowing supposed to enter these commands.

I can find blank spaces all over Ubuntu to type in all these commands/codes, but it is just a guessing game as to where. Like “you must first become administrator” How? Where? When? I spoke loudly and told my machine “yes I am the administrator” but you guessed it... it did not listen (just adding some humor to my frustration)

I really wish people that know could understand that there are others that do not already know and are lost without specific instructions.

Code code code where do I type in each and every line of code? When where and how is just as redundant as code code code and not telling someone where when and how makes the codes meaningless. The whole instructions are null and void, there is no way the author can know how many people view his masterpiece and can not understand a word of it, is this a shame on the reader or the writer?

Thanks for any help no matter how elementary it may appear to be to you; I am a know-not so you must be simple and basic to people that knows not and admits it.

Richard,

Why do you want to install antivirus on your Linux machine? Are you using it as a mail server?

Anti-virus on Linux -

Well it is pretty much accepted that there isn't a reason to worry about a virus infection on Linux. Most people install anti-virus onto Linux machines when they want to protect Windows machines from virus. An example of this would be an e-mail server because the emails may be sent to a Windows machine and so you would want to stop the email that contains the virus even though it can not infect your Linux system. That is one of the reasons that that Linux is so great for the average home user as it is one less thing that they have to worry about. Having an anti-virus program running in the background examining all of your files as they are accessed will of course slow down your system, and why slow down your system if the virus can't infect your Linux system.

Other then that, those commands would be entered into the terminal. Applications>Accessories>Terminal.

About installing software, there are many ways to do so. I would read through https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware
and most people end up using the following at least once :-)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

If you need any more help, feel free to file another support request. The wiki http://wiki.ubuntu.com/ and the forums http://ubuntuforums.org are really good places for information.

Also, if your question is solved, could you please mark it as so.

Best Regards,
Williamts99
