Dell GX-620 64-bit or 32? desktop or server?

Asked by Flope

I know … strange question. I am completely new in linux. I am going to try to explain this.
My computer: Dell GX620 (ultra small box). CPU intel pentium4HT. In the dell web says:
New Intel® EM64T processors offer flexibility for 32-bit and 64-bit computing on the desktop and allows for future 64 bit application and OS use.

New Intel® Pentium® 4 with HT Technology 600 sequence processors featuring 2MB L2 cache are designed to provide increased performance and productivity for high end office applications. Intel® Pentium® 4 with HT Technology 600 sequence processors also feature Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® Technology (EIST). EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency, which can result in decreased average power consumption and decreased average heat production.

Then, what installation should I use 64 or 32 bit?
Desktop or Server? I used to use Apache (on windows) to test dynamic webs and to serve them to a small network (10 computers). I would like to do the same so, I was wondering which one will be better: use desktop and install Apache or use server option.
Thank you for your time,

Well, the Server vs. Desktop question can really only answered by yourself. The Desktop installation can happily support an Apache installation for a small network, but personally I would be reluctant to use it to serve a live web-site on the Internet.

As for the 64 bit or 32 bit version, the following URL suggests that for your EMT64T, you should use the 64bit disc.

Perhaps one thing you might consider in your decision is that the only visible difference between the two, Desktop and Server is the existence of a Graphical User Interface.

So, the other way of looking at this, is to install Desktop unless you have specific reason not to.
