Have a look at your Login Window preferences at System > Administration > Login Window.

have see that thanks... it seems that the resolution or screen size is not right... because once the Nvidia software is installed that is when I cannot see the dark brown section of the lower screen with the doodads on. I have Viewsonic VG700b, the above grapgics card rinning at
1280x1024@50hz nvidia FX generic driver.
also at boot up when you see the ubuntu loading bar some times I get a nice crisp small version then other times a larger chunkier one, also I see the Nvidia logo screen as well all adds up to something ... by the way this is only a cosmetic thing I love this linux stuff... will be switching over from XP very soon... wish wine would work though...

OK I have solved my own problem ....
in the "Application .. other... screens and graphics"
here, instead of selecting my actual monitor type ( Viewsonic VG700b) I chose the lcd panel 1080x1024 the res I wanted...... that ggot the menu at the bottom of the longin screen ....I did not change my video card settings so it seems to be a monitor thing or in my case LCD
