E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

when i try to open synaptic package manager this is what i got

Execute(in a terminal):-
sudo apt-get update

once that is done see if your problem is solved, if it isn't then post the output of:-
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
