What is this 'Hardware Information' I keep hearing about?

I'm new to Linux. I just installed Ubuntu 8.4 and I'm trying to set up my wireless internet. 'Network Manager' only shows my wired connection. So I looked at the trouble shooting section and the first thing it says is to look in System ▸ Preferences ▸ Hardware Information to check for device recognition, but my System ▸ Preferences does not have a 'Hardware Information'. Any ideas?

I'm having to translate from XP to Linux in my mind - but I'll add my voice... What the heck is the equivalent of the Device Manager? I've found System/Admin/Hardware Profiles - but am very nervous of doing anything that'll break this preinstall.

For info - am trying to get my wifi to work on a Thinkpad R61i (separately logged)

try seeing if the card supplier has linux drivers available.. if not look to see in... system..administration... hardware drivers... see what that says it picked mine up first time "suport for Atheros 802.11 wireless lan"... my wireless card is a Dlink

"Hardware Information" used to link to the gnome-device-manager program. However it is not installed in Ubuntu by default anymore, as it was not very user-friendly. There is an idea for improvement in this area in the brainstorm site: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3840/
