Is there a new method of file browsing in 8.04?

Asked by Cosmopoet

Hello,

I have installed the Server version and the Live version to test and for whatever reason I can see Ubuntu from other machines and my Ubuntu can't see the other machines at all. If I remember correctly there was a time when I did see the other machines on the network however when accessing them I would get a blank window.

So just to test, I shoved in a 7.10 Live disk and everything is fine. This is also going on in a Fedora 9 release. ( I don't expect an answer for the Feodora just noting it)

Is there anything that I am unaware of that is in the latest releases that requires a new form of file/machine browsing?

Thank you

Cosmopoet

could you define what you mean by "can't see other machines"

Can it not see the host on the network (eg: respond to ping)
Can it not see advertised shares (network browser)
Can it see shares but not see data on the shares (nautilus)
Are the other machines ubuntu/linux/windows
Are the other machines sharing data ? if so how, Samba/NFS/Windows Shares ?

Could you please be a little more specific in what you are doing and the issues you are seeing please.

Hello Matt,
Thanks for the reply,

Sorry for the poor informatiom here.

4 Servers Win 2003
1 Server Win 2008
2 Cent OS 5 Servers

I am running the live CD and I can view/see all hosts via Places>>Network
I can ping all of them. I can connnect to them if I explicitly want to connect to a share

via Places>>> Connect to A Server Then use Windows share option or VNC or just connect.
It seems that I have to be explicit in the share that I am connecting to

I cannot however just click on one server/host in the nautilus view pane/window and open a host as in the previous version of Ubuntu.
I do not even get a logon prompt in this fashion.

Thanks

Thats a tricky one as I'm not sure that you should be able to browse like that, unless samba's daemons are configured correctly and up and running, as when you mount it you use smbfs kernel modules, but to browse it I'd expect to have to have your client machine running in the same work group as your server.

This is by no means fact, just working it through in public for you.

Hello Matt,

Thanks for the reply,

Well it just appears strange to me that this is only shown up in the new version of Ubuntu 8.04
If I pop in the 7.10 I can browse the network just fine. Fedora 9 is also doing this. So I installed F8 and it works too.

I am sure that I can figure it out as it is all over the Fedora forum (name resolution errors). I wanted to consult a few here to see if this is something that I just missed. Or a feature change.

It has, however, been in my experience, to get Ubuntu to play nice in the file sharing category. The very nice thing about Ubuntu is that the smb.conf is well documented and helpful. Do you have a network that you can try this on?

Pop in the Live CD

From the desktop Places>> Network and tell me what you see? Do you see all your hosts? If so can you double click on one and get the prompt for logging into that machine?

If all of the above is true then that is correct. Bur I am wiling to bet that you will not get a prompt for the host on the network you will get a blank window after the cursor just spins.

Then try the Live CD in 7.10..... it will work.

Thanks for the tine and attention.
Joseph
