ubuntu installer crashed now what?

Asked by mehatename

I'm a first time linux user and I'm really lost.

I have a dell latitude c640. It had xp pro on it and I had a problem with the registry and it wouldn't boot and I don't have a cd, so I decided to try Ubuntu 6.10.

when i first try the installer it lock up in partitioning because I tryed to install and keep xp on too. The log file said that I needed to shut down windows properly.

So microsoft is evil anyways, I tryed to do a install with complete reformat. But close to the end (70% ish) it crashed and I followed the direction and posted the bug...

now what do I try?

Is there a tool on the live cd I can use to check my hard drive for errors?

You should attach /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman to your bug request. If you aren't sure, follow the directions in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs.

I had problems installing with my laptop (windows XP as well!). I had to remove my battery and run it purely on mains - for some reason ??? it worked!

Maybe give it a try...?

Can you help with this problem?
