Need to know if ubuntu works with Gateway GM 5472 desktop

Asked by dumpa

Hi,
I'm about to buy a new desktop computer and I want to put ubuntu on it.
I found this refurbished Gateway GM 5472 and would like to know if Ubuntu is compatible with all of its components

It is a Gateway GM5472 Refurbished AMD Desktop Computer - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz (Dual-Core), 2GB DDR2, 500GB SATA II HDD, DVD±RW Dual-Layer, Flash Media Reader, TV Tuner, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE graphics and 7.1 channel High Definition sound.

Has someone installed it before?

dumpa,

Your model is not listed here:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/Gateway

It is also not listed here:

    http://tuxmobil.org/gateway.html

And googling for your model, and the keyword linux, does not provide any helpful links.

I would assume, based on the above, that support from users with the same laptop is relatively scarce. I would also assume that any hardware quirks related specifically to the laptop are generally not known.

Based on the components of the laptop you have listed, I would hazard a guess that linux, including Ubuntu can be installed. But I would be prepared to resolve potential issues that may be specific to the design of the laptop.

Please report back here and indicate if this Solves your question, or if you require further information.

Thanks,

Harvey

Thanks Harvey but it is not a laptop it is a desktop.
Is there a similar list for desktops?

dumpa,

I apologize for misreading your question. It clearly stated desktop twice.

I am not aware of similar lists for desktops. But the lack of usable links provided by a google search indicates to me that the specific desktop you are looking at is not used in large numbers with linux of any type. Otherwise installation reports would be readily found.

I believe my hazardous guess above still applies, just replace the word 'laptop' with 'desktop'.

Thanks,

Harvey

Thanks Harvey.
I was going to buy it because it is cheap, now I'm going to look a bit more before buying a desktop.
any recommendations?

dumpa,

You are welcome.

I saved a bundle on my last laptop purchase from the Dell Outlet. The best pricing are obviously the refurbished and scratch and dent. I took a chance on a scratch and dent, and made out like a bandit. The scratch was merely cosmetic, on the case.

If you don't mind refurbished then I would give Dell a look. I haven't checked the pricing on your model, so cannot compare.

Best regards,

Harvey
