I think Ubuntu needs 256 Mb of Ram. I think that you've got some small Linux versions that use less Ram.

You might want to try Xubuntu, it's meant for lightweight systems. They say it can run with 64 MB ram once installed, but you will have to opt for the alternate installation CD, because the LiveCD needs 128MB of RAM.
In terms of live cds DSL and Puppy might be the only ones you can run.

Okay one last option for running a modern OS on a dated computer, but a bit harder: gentoo. If the system is built for your computer only using what you want it to use it will run fast. But I think that you will get decent performance from the OSs I mentioned above anyway.

No. The minimum requirement for Ubuntu is 384MB. Xubuntu can install with only 64 but will probably not run well. I think they suggest a minimum of 192 to run and recommend 256mb.

You should consider a lighter weight distro like adonet suggested or consider upgrading the amount of RAM if that's an option.

I agree, Damn Small Linux could be a try, but only if you're trying to get the max out of 64 Mb.

I used Ubuntu 6.10 on a 384 Mb machine and was able to run Win XP in a Virtual box with 256 Ram given to the virtual machine in it. And it didn't run slow at all on a pentium III machine.

Can you help with this problem?
