No need Andrew ;)
I've tried again that guide you gave me above with new driver from ATI and my card works now:

"s7habo@habo:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X1300 Series Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6286 (8.33.6)"

Thanks again for your suggestion!

HI Boris, I'm running Feisty Fawn and I was wondering were could I get the new drivers you mention:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.

Hi adi, FF,

installation of ATI proprietary 'fglrx' driver is since Fiesty Fawn no more complicated. There is a nice Tutorial which describes how to do that:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

Good luck,

Boris

Boris, thanks a lot. The Tutorial worked great.

I now con use my full 1680x1050 resolution and, when I type: fglrxinfo

I get:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1300
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6334 (8.34.8)

I'm running a DELL INSPIRON 6400

I hope this help someone else.

Thanks again.

Hi, seems I was celebrating a little two early. When I get use the ATI card I cannot use the Desktop effects. I get a Composite Extension error. I've also tryed to install Beryl unsuccessfully.

I've been reading that Raedon does not support Composite. Am i really 100% destined to unexciting graphics? ;)

Any comments are welcome.

hi FF,

Yes, at the moment you cannot use Desktop effects with ATI proprietary driver.
There is a way to get Beryl to work with xgl described at some forums, but you wont be happy with results.
Beryl is (even with other cards) very unstable and still in development, so i suggest you to wait until things gets better.
At the oder side, you can change many things on your GNOME desktop to make it "exciting" without 3D effects.
You can start here:
