Sony Vaio laptop wireless problems

Asked by radrob

Upon upgrading Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 lost video, audio and wireless lan functionality.
My machine is a Sony Vaio VGN-S56GP laptop.
I have been successful in getting the video back to the originating resolution by googling frantically, but the audio and wireless hardware still have had no joy...
:(
My kernel version is: 2.6.24-16-386 and I am using gnome, not KDE (if that helps). by running the command lspci, I have listed my hardware associated with this laptop below:

Desperately seeking assistance.....As you can possibly tell, I'm a windows convert and only been using Ubuntu for about 6 months now. Fairly new to the exciting world of LINUX. Being a newby to LINUX, i've already struck a brick wall. Need help....

If all else fails, I'm considering backing up all personal data and re-installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu, but would prefer not. As i'm a strong believer in persisting and solving this problem.
Help.....
Rob.

I got assistance from the folks at #alsa on the irc channel irc.freenode.org they have scripts that analyze your system reporting what
software is loaded and how alsa is set up, additionally they can give you some consol commands to use in order to set things so they
should work. view http://home.cfl.rr.com/infofiles/record.html but for best results get help from #alsa channel for hardware solutions
check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport

For video, get into single user mode and run 'X -configure', test with X -config <configuration-from-X--configure>
For sound run alsamixer, see if throws any errors(get alsamixer, if you don't have it)
Not sure about wireless for the IntelPro card.

Hardcorelinux and wirechief.
Thanks for your words of wisdom, unfortunately tried both options you both suggested with no joy. I ended up reverting to the old windows way, by backing up all my personal data and re-installing ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron from scratch with complete success, and minimal configuration required. Weird....??? I know.
I figure it was something else within my particular system config, that inhibited the audio and wireless to cease working after upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04.
I want to thank you both again, and since i'm a newby to linux i see this as an alternative to resolving the matter at hand. Didn't quite solve the problem just went the long way around to get to the end point.
Oh well...
Cheers,
Rob
