08-09-2016 UPDATE FAILED, NO COMPIZ, NO GUI.

I am filing this report from another family members Windows Computer: I am NOT a technical geek. Gee thanks for for checking your updates before posting them. I installed the 08-09-2016 updates, Compiz crashed twice after the required restart, And now I have no GUI, just a black screen with a mouse cursor. I tried CTRL+ALT+F5 logged in to the headless NO GUI format, and reattempted sudo apt-get update, and sudo apt-get install -f. after this and a reboot, I still only get a black screen with mouse cursor and NO GUI.
Ubuntu 12.04.05 LTS Which I have only been running for Three Years, I did not update to 14.04 LTS because I use a Wacom Bamboo Pen (only) Tablet instead of a mouse, which REQUIRES to be able to adjust mouse cursor acceleration speed and Mouse Emulation in order to function correctly. Which features are DISABLED in the 14.04 release and beyond, (And these Mouse cursor functions DISABLING has never been fixed by Canonical either.)

how do I recover my Ubuntu OS GUI which this 08-09-2016 update screwed up?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs.

You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at http://askubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org.

Does the system have a make and model?

I do get the Initial Purple Ubuntu Start Up Purple Screen with the Progress dots, It then goes to a Black Background Screen with Active Mouse Cursor Displayed. It is at this point that the GUI would then usually be displayed. But since this last update, IT DOESN'T!!

There is no "Make and Model". System is Older home built PT800CE-A Mother Board, Pentium4 3.00Ghz. ATI 9600PRO Series Graphics Card (had to swap out cards once about a year or so back). There are no current proprietary (Catalyst) drivers available for this older series card, which is practically the only thing which can be used with this older mother board's 8X AGP slot.

This IS definitely a Bug caused by the 08-09-2016 Update,
And I need a solution, not a typical run-around.

If I Hold Right Shift to get to the Grub Menu while booting, and attempt to Load a previous release Generic it still now generates the same problem. If I use CTRL+ALT+F5 and log in, then startx - I get (EE) Fatal Server Error. (EE) Server is already active for display 0. If from this screen I attempt sudo apt-get install desktop I get.. Your Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE) Is Supported until April 2017. Unable to locate Package Desktop.

If I Boot from the Original Bootable Install Thumb Drive, and use the 'Try Ubuntu' option it has No Problems presenting the GUI. But no way to access any of my more recent (what previously were functional updates), files, applications, or settings.

If this had been done attempting to force End of Service see the above part about the (HWE) Still being in the Support Time Frame.

I see that as of Saturday August 13, 2016. I still have no valid help or answer reguarding this update having rendered the GUI and subsequently the Ubuntu OS install completely useless. No valid answer to recover it can be found either.

This is all too reminiscent of why I had switched to Ubuntu Linux to begin with. When the unscruplous of a major OS retailer used Microsoft Essentials Updates to render THREE Legitimate COA Windows XP intsallations on Three separate computers BRICKED in order to attempt to FORCE sales of Windows 8 at the time.

Snooper, this isn't the only place to get support. Have you asked for help at http://ubuntuforums.org.?

After a week's time. with what seemed as though the generic amdcpu driver for my ATI v360 type video card had been stripped out of the kernel or packages by the update, and NO viable help on this from anyone which merely Ignored the matter. I was forced to do a completely new install, And in the process, losing all of that which had previously been installed in relation Wine and Wine apps because of this. ..No support for fglrx, no support for Mouse cursor speed or acceleration, no recognition whatsoever of Older Wacom BAMBOO type tablets. No more apt-get. Seems with every new incarnation of Ubuntu, more and more "native support" of peripherals (and even some program functioning) gets stripped out. What had sold me on even trying Ubuntu rather than windows to begin with, was Leo Lapport on his 'The Tech Guy' radio program a few years back, stating that one of the advantages of Ubuntu Linux was that they retained 'native support' for older hardware in their kernels and updates, so that the disadvantaged with older hardware could still get some use out of that.
