corrupted hard drive

Asked by Mike006

I'm an idiot.
I booted into rescue mode from GRUB, and selected drop to root prompt. Then, I ran "fsck", ignoring the warning.
Long story short, I've corrupted my hard drive, and now am using my computer from the live CD. Booting normally just gives me grub error 17. Gparted can't tell what file system type my boot partition is. Can anyone think of a way I can rescue my system, or even just get some of my files back?

It would probably be good to start with a damage assessment. There is a good chance you can get your files back, but after copying them somewhere else I'd recommend a fresh install.

Could you describe your storage? How many disks, what type, how were they partitioned, etc? And, for each disk, what does parted say about it? You can check fairly quickly with...

  sudo parted /dev/sda print

Also, could you describe a little more about what happened? Why did you boot into rescue mode, and what was the warning given by fsck?

Grub error 17 means "I see the partition but cannot determine what file system it is". So if you run fsck on it after getting into a recovery console, make sure you can put the system back (all files and directories correctly named ...)

It works!!
The answer was simpler than i thought. I simply ran "Sudo e2fsck /dev/sda1", from the live CD and answered the default for each question, and now my computer works. Thanks!!!
