Problem regards Saving Files into External Hard Disc

Asked by fennylai

Hello. Thanks for solving my previous problem and i just countered some problems on yesterday when i try to save some files into my external hard disc from Ubuntu Operating System and open using Windows XP Operating System. I first put the screen shot images that i took and save into my external hard disc in Ubuntu OS. After that i've double check and make sure that the files is inside the external hard disc. Then i change my OS to Windows XP then i found that there is nothing inside my external hard disc. I've tried twice for this and the results are still the same.

After that, i try to save the files into my external hard disc in Ubuntu OS then unplug my external hard disc and replug it again into my laptop. Then i found that same thing happen even i didn't change the operating system. Can i know is this happen because of my external hard disc problem? By thw way i am using the latest version of Ubuntu(8.04)

This is the specifications of my external hard disc:

Brand: Seagate
Size: Sata2/120GB

Thank you for helping on this.

Please note that Launchpad is for reporting bugs, not asking for help.
What kind of file system do you have on that disc? Windows can't read Linux file systems.
So files just disappear from your disc?

I've thought that this is a bug as the files that i save into my external hard disc is disappear?

Yes the file is disappear as long as i unplug the external hard disc and replug it into the laptop.
even i didnt unplug it, the files still disappear when i change back to windows XP.

Sorry that i need to add in some detail on the problem that i countered:

I can understand that Windows can't read Linux file systems, yet i still using Ubuntu to check the problem that i encountered.

The file that i try to save its in .PNG file where it is some images or screen shots that i took using PrintScreen.
I save those files into the external hard disc and yes they did show that the files are inside the external hard disc but once i plug off and replug my external hard disc into my laptop, files inside still gone.

I only manage to copy those files by putting them into one of my program files folder in Ubuntu and open in Windows XP.

Thanks.

Does every single file disappear? The disc is always empty then? What about the files you copy onto the disc with winxp?

I can see the files that i save from windows XP in Ubuntu. Only the files that i save into disc from Ubuntu disappeared in WinXP, or after i unplug/replug onto my laptop (for Ubuntu and WinXp)

Did you unmount the external hard disk before you unplugged it from your Ubuntu PC? To do that you right-click on the icon of the external hard disk and choose unmount. If you don't unmount the disk, the files are only written to buffers in your RAM memory, but not to the hard disk itself.

Can you help with this problem?
