Asked by Subin Raju

I have installed Ubuntu 7.10 in my system from the cd received thru shipit.
It got installed fine. But I'm not able to play any mp3, audio and video cds using any player.

I tried to install the .deb package of 'gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly', but ended up in error.
Was not able to install that too.

What was the error message saying? Try installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad , gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly and gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and you should be able to play a lot of music and movies =).

Close Synaptic, Add/Remove and so on and start a terminal and write the following:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

Thanks for your immediate response. I tried to install the .deb packages by double clicking it from the desktop.
To install through the terminal, where should I place the packages ? thanks in advance..

I don't understand. You don't have to download any .deb packages on your own. All you have to do is to write in "sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg" in a terminal, press enter, give your password and then wait.

What happens if you do that?

Isak Frants : Thanks for your help. When i tried in the terminal, I get errors like 'package not found' or 'folder not found'. So I
assumed that as the installation is done from the shipped cd and not from dvd, it must be a basic version without the packages. So I needed to download the packages of gstreamer to install them.

marquinos : Thanks for your advice ! I actually knew that ;-) If i had an internet connection why all these troubles. i would have gone ahead installing all the required codecs online. :-). Since I have not got an internet connection, i have to get things dowloaded from a net cafe. PS: I have a dial up connection, it would be nice of u if u could give me the steps to connect a dial up connection. :-)

I'm a newbie to Ubuntu. I'm so impressed that I want to make it as usable as Windows xp somehow such that i can stop using xp anymore. Please help.

Alright, btw, have you enabled the repositories? System-->Administration-->Software sources (or something similar). Have you got the first 4 checkboxes checked? =)

You said you got an error message when trying to install the .deb packages. What was the error?

I'm unfamiliar to dial up and Ubuntu :/ Can't help you on that one.

Sorry for the delay in getting back. When I type the command "sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg" in the terminal i get the error :

E: package gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad has no installation candidate

When i install any .deb packages I get the following error:

E: couldn't find package required package

1. Once again, have you enabled repositories? System-->Administration-->Software sources (or something similar). Have you got the first 4 checkboxes checked?

2. What happens if you write in: "sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg"?

3. What required package could not be found when you tried installing the .deb?

Ya, I have got the first 4 checkboxes enabled. Then when I give the command "sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg", I get the same error as I stated earlier.

E: package gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad has no installation candidate

Is there any problem with the installation I have done ? But I felt that the installation has been done fine.

Doesn't the shipped cd contain all the required packages ?

Hm.. I don't think anything went wrong in the installation. When you write that into a terminal, is the computer connected to internet?

No, Ubuntu cannot ship all packages because of legal issues :S They can be downloaded later, very easily if your computer is connected to internet. Then all dependencies will automatically be installed. The package "gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly" (which enables mp3 among other things) has got many dependencies you must manually download as .deb in order to install the "gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly" package if you don't have internet.

I realized now that the computer not was connected to internet, right? Then all this "sudo apt-get whatever" stuff will not do a THING.
Here is the ugly.deb https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/gutsy/i386/gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly/0.10.6-0ubuntu2 . You can see at the bottom all the dependencies it has. In order to install "gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly" you must have all those dependencies installed, so one way could be to grab them manually as .deb and then try to install all of them.
