nvidia graphics card driver

i am completely new to Linux just install Ubuntu 8.04, installation went fine but i don't know how to install the graphics card i have the nvidia 9600GT 512MB graphics i try reading some instruction from other people but it makes no sense how to explain i found a beta driver on the nvidia website (173.08) but how do i install it could you please list it in steps on how to install this driver to get my card working on where do i start and finish what exactly should i do

It's easy -- go to System→Administration→Hardware Drivers and here choose the driver and system will install it ;).

i went to system-administration-hardware drivers the box open but its empty there is nothing in it to select

i have done this but what do i do next below is the what the terminal done

i haven't got a clue on what to do next to install my graphics driver i have already download a driver from the nvidia website please tell me what to do next

unfortunatly your graphics card is just a bit too new, nvidia as a beta driver (as you have downloaded) but its not shipped with ubuntu this version, you can expect it to work flawlessly next version (out in october) or you can install the beta driver manually, you can follow this guide here in order to do that: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual

but i have read about people that have use this exact card and they said it works but the way they explain it on their blogs is just hard to understand they don't explain in great details

your graphics card *does* work, just not without using the beta drivers. see above.
