When the system starts my username and password do not work

Was working on setting up a dialup network. Now when I start up the dial up is dailing but its not connected to a phone line and my username and password do not work anymore

I was thinking about reinstalling ubuntu but I donot want to loss any information and alter my partitation sizes

duplicate of below question. answered there.
Also, you should know that you will not need to worry about repartitioning. Simply delete the current Ubuntu ext3 partition, leaving unallocated space. When you install Ubuntu, you can select to install using the largest unallocated space.
