Hello, and thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

The solution to your issue would be to open the Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type the following command:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

You will be asked to enter your password (password will not be echoed) and then dpkg will try to fix itself. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for this question.

Open a commandline terminal (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal) and execute the following command:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Hopefully this will run through and resolve any errors. If so you can further install packages in the usual way. Otherwise, please paste the error messages appearing on the screen here.

Hope this helps.

OK, Help me please - going round in circles here!
Very new to Ubuntu/Linux so probably doing something obviously wrong, but I just don't know!

I had same problem...Synaptic Package Manager won't open.
I followed the advice above, i.e. typing command

sudo dpkg --configure -a

into the terminal, entered password and it ran for a little bit, then returned;

Setting up initramfs-tools (0.85eubuntu39.3) ...
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)

Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-23-generic

gzip: stdout: No space left on device
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-23-generic
dpkg: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Now dunno what have done right, done wrong, or what to do next?
Any help much appreciated thanks!
