Can't install Ubuntu

Asked by Chad777

I have an ISO copy of Ubuntu 8.0.4 and it worked great on my desktop computer. When I tried to install it on my laptop I got the message that a file was missing. (b4/code5.fw, I think) I found a solution for this problem, except you have to add the file inside of Ubuntu, and I can't install it because the file is missing. When I try to install it, it starts like normal and when the orange bar quits ping ponging and starts filling up, after it fills, it goes to the error message. Then I just get a black screen, the computer says its thinking, but nothing ever happens, and if I do it in safe graphics mode then I get a crappy looking picture of the desktop (with the heron) but no toolbars or icons, and again it says its thinking, but I let it sit for more than an hour and a half and it never does anything. Well, the bottom line is, how to I add this file when I can't get into Ubuntu? Oh, and I can't run it inside of windows because I only have 256 MB of ram so when windows is running it is consuming most of it and when I try to run Ubuntu is says it can't because it need 256 MB of ram... so, I'm stumped.

You can use a program like tugzip to add the file to the ISO then burn it to a disc.

Which type of install are you doing? Install inside Windows or the full install?
If you are doing the install inside Windows, it does not matter how much RAM Windows takes up as you will reboot to get into Ubuntu. Same for the full install.

I want to do the full install, and the ram was... that I tried to open ubuntu inside windows. When I put the disk in, and said install inside Windows, it stopped and said " you need at least 256 MB". But I don't want to install inside Windows anyways, so I will google search tugzip.

Thank You.

OK, well, now I compressed the code5.fw file into an ISO file(was the only way to put in with Ubuntu ISO) and added it, burned it, went to install it and got the exact same message, so I don't know what to do.... there must be a way to install Ubuntu on my laptop, I tried disabling the broadcom card, but that didn't work... will it work if I uninstall it, and then reinstall it after I get Ubuntu installed? Or will it not matter because I will just be uninstalling it from Windows? If I don't get an answer here I guess i'll have to give up. :( Bummer, cuz I hate Windows!

No, the installer does not have a GUI, I have noticed that it sometimes works for odd reasons so here is the link:
I assume you use a 32bit processor. http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso

This seems to have worked, it is still going through the installation process, but I believe it will work. Thank you so much.

Were did you get that alternate disc from ?

I googled for it, that usually works for finding linux discs. In this case I searched "ubuntu hardy alternate".

Well that disc worked...I got it installed, but I can't for nothing get my sound, video, or wireless card drivers working. I know how to do the b43 for the wireless, but everything I try says I don't have permission, even under root...so I don't know....

Are you on a laptop, and do you have nvidia, also realtek wireless, and what is your sound card?

This SHOULD go on another thread, but I'm happy to try to help you.
