Upgraded OS From Dialog Box - WRONG!!!!!

Asked by Lester S

Ubuntu 14 is current system, a notice popped up asked to upgrade to 16.04, I did and what a fatal mistake! I am constantly getting errors, freezing up, can't even do a backup, can't copy files. Needless to say I am so MAD I can't see straight. Why is that method offered if it is a complete failure? I remembered that the best way is to do a complete clean and reinstall, too late now! Before I do a backup I delete old files and do a first time backup to save space, I had no why of knowing of the errors I ran into or I wouldn't have done that. Now I'm going to loose a lot of information. I guess a backup of backups is required? Again, too late now! Any help will be greatly appreciated if there is any.

Yes a backup of backups is wise if your information is important to you.

What errors do you see on screen?

I didn't write them down, some were not having permission to copy, maybe not recognizing extensions.

I tried Testdrive to retrieve my deleted backups. I wanted to find them, copy or move them, that didn't work. Any way to do that?

If you provide details of the problems that you see, we might be able to help correcting the errors.

Hello, first I got 2 fatal internal errors during upgrade which I reported. Right now I'm using a backup called ukopp which is working but it's been 3 hours and has only stored 638.0 MB of info, really slow. The backup that came with Ubuntu 14 LTS would end with an error and not store anything. When I tried deleting backup files it would leave a dozen or so. Boot up used to take less than a minute, now it's twice that long with my HHD light constantly on. It's also unmounting flash drives and my external drive runs continuously with no way of stopping it only by shutting down.

More things come to mind. A white screen during boot up for about 20 seconds. The ubuntu logo sometimes looks like it's in safe mode, fuzzy strange colors. Enter password to unlock your login keyring is always popping up. When Firefox is coming into view it only fills half the display for a split second then expands to the right to full screen. Mail and Firefox work as normal, other functions are really slow like the system is clogged up.

I suggest that you start with a full file system check by booting into a live session from an Ubuntu installer in the "Try Ubuntu without installing" mode, and performing a file system check on all your Ubuntu-related partitions.

How to run fsck and what am I looking for?

boot into a live session from an Ubuntu installer in the "Try Ubuntu without installing" mode,
open a terminal and issue the command

sudo fdisk -l

this will list all partitions on the disks. Select the one(s) that is (are) the storage for your Ubuntu system on the hard disk(s) and issue the fsck command against that partition

You should look for errors or success messages.

First I listed my disks in my installed OS and have dev/sda1-boot, dev/sad2- swap, dev/sda3-H:, and dev/sda- free space. I set these when I installed ubuntu 14. Now in try ubuntu fdisk -l lists: disk dev/ramo thru dev/ram15, my dev/sda1 thru dev/sda3 and dev/sda, ran fsck and no errors (clean). Now I have a dev/sdb, dev/sdb1 which is empty and dev/sdb2 EFI (fat -12/24/32), ran fsck on dev/sdb2 and said EFI bad short file name- choose 1)drop file, 2)rename, 3)auto-rename, and 4)keep it, I picked 4 so not to change anything. The empty partitions said fsck from util- linux. Are there partitions inside partitions?

I have 2 PC's, this one and one with ubuntu 14 just for emergencies, could I network them together, copy transfer my files and then do a backup on it? That's the only thing holding me up. A successful backup would allow a clean 16 install on this PC.

Of course it is possible to connect two computers in a way that you can copy file from one system to the other, e.g. for backup purposes.
Techniques allowing this are among others remote copy (scp or rcp) and nfs mounting.
Nautilus has a "File - connect to server" functionality that also helps for such purpose.

Maybe you us http://askubuntu.com/questions/327601/how-to-transfer-files-from-one-server-to-another and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH/TransferFiles as a starting point

Can you link me how set up PC's together? They are both connected to a router from my ethernet modem with cables, not Wi-Fi.
What is your analysis on the previous fdisk results?
Thanks

When I list properties on my home folder is says some contents unreadable. Then it won't accept sharing mode but I found that I don't have the required packages installed, I guess network set up? I also thought taking the HDD out, install in other PC as extra drive and see if backup works on that OS. Possible? Just trying to help unless your looking for solution to existing problem for future reference.
Thanks

For the fdisk and fsck results:
I assume that the medium that you used for the live system was shown as sdb. The partitions to be checked were (according to your output) dev/sda1-boot, and dev/sda3-H (I assume /home, not H:). If they did not show any errors, then this is good.

If you want to connect the computers logically over the network, then you should start trying to ping one from the other. Use ifconfig to find out the ip addresses, and try "ping numerical.address.of.system" on one computer providing the address of the other one as parameter. What output do you get?

And yes, of course plugging the hard disk of one computer into the other one for direct access is also a good idea.

What is the exact output related to the problem "When I list properties on my home folder is says some contents unreadable"?

Please break this question down more, I don't understand how to answer. ( I assume that the medium that you used for the live system was shown as sdb.) Dev/sda1 was boot and clean, dev/sdb1 was also boot but is was empty which gave fsck from util-linux 2.27.1., dev/sda2 is swap partition, dev/sda3 is H: HPFS/NTFS partition and dev/sda which unallocated space, don't know where home is located. When I right click on my home folder file and click properties, under the basic tab it displays name, type, and contents with how many items and how many gigs, under that in parentheses- some contents unreadable.
Ask again if my answers weren't adequate.
Thanks

What is the output of the command

ls -lad ~/.g*

(It seems that I misinterpreted your listing of "dev/sda3 is H: HPFS/NTFS". This apparently is not a Linux-formatted partition, but is related to Windows. There is no need to run a Linux fsck on it.)

With respect to "some contents unreadable" I suggest the following command to search for files below your home directory that are not owned by yourself

find ~ ! -user `whoami` -ls

(to be executed when logged in normally, not in the Try Ubuntu mode).

Do you need the results?

Revision history for this message
Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

No, I do not need to see the results.
But if you check the list yourself, you might identify files with a wrong ownership, such that you cannot access them.
You might be able to change the file protection settings that you can access them. I would expect that you are allowed access to all files in your own home directory. (command syntax: sudo chown user:group filename)

Everything listed is owned by me and I can open the listed files and open there contents.

This is strange. The command should list only files NOT owned by you.

The command looks correct.

What is the output of

find /home/lessho ! -user lessho -ls

(I assume that lessho is you username, if it is different, please adapt the command. This has to be executed when normally logged in, not from a live session in the "Try Ubuntu" mode))

Try

and then repeat the find command.

It seems that there are two download directories,
/home/lessho/Downloads
and
/home/lessho/Downloaded

Repeat with

sudo chown lessho:lessho /home/lessho/Downloads/hplip-3.16.5/.libs/*
sudo find /home/lessho ! -user lessho -ls

How may different version of HPLIP do you have downloaded?

Your output shows the following versions:
hplip-3.14.3
hplip-3.14.4
hplip-3.14.6
hplip-3.14.10
hplip-3.15.2
hplip-3.15.4
hplip-3.15.6
hplip-3.15.7
hplip-3.15.9
hplip-3.15.11
hplip-3.16.2
hplip-3.16.3
hplip-3.16.5
hplip-3.16.7

I suggest that you do some cleanup by removing all versions except the one with the highest version number 3.16.7

For correcting the ownership execute

sudo chown lessho:lessho /home/lessho/Downloads/hplip-3.*/.libs/*
sudo chown lessho:lessho /home/lessho/DownLoaded/hplip-3.*/.libs/*

first.

I only had the latest one installed but I went ahead and did as instructed and they deleted without any problems, both folders. Could they be causing a conflict? Never had issues before.

OK Now I have a "lost+found" file on my flash drive I was going to try a backup on. I did an erase existing files format from the disk utility which took an hour and file was still there. The disks utility says it's mounted but the ukopp utility says it's valid but not mounted so no backup. I think I read that fsck creates file when encountering a problem.

lost+found is not a file, but a directory, and it is supposed to exist on all file systems with ext2, ext3 or ext4 formatting (the usual standard for file systems on Linux).

What is now your problem?

The lost+found directory is on a flash drive which I was trying to backup on and I can not move or delete it. I did an erase all data format in disk utility and is still there. Can it be moved?

Why do you want to delete it? It is needed by the ext2/3/4 file system. Just ignore that it is there.

OK. My original backup system used an external drive which I set to resume later on the backup utility which can with Ubuntu 14.04. When I open the backup utility I get "backup failed, Error creating directory: Input/output error."

This might indicate that the flash drive is defective.
Also deleting all files should not take an hour.
I suggest that you try a different backup medium.

OK. I'm going to replace my external hard drive and replace my HDD with an SSD as an upgrade and deal with these problems later, that way I won't lose my data. Sorry for all the headaches and thanks for your help. Next time an upgrade box appears, IT WILL BE IGNORED!
Thanks Again!
