Compiz Fusion not working in VirtualBox

Asked by Imran Shahid

I have IBM Thinkpad T60 Notebook running Windows XP SP3 and I am using VirtualBox 1.6.0 to run Ubuntu 8.04.

I have tried to install Compiz Fusion on it, the installation goes fine without any hiccups but when I try to enable the desktop effects, it says, "Desktop effects cannot be enabled".

I tried the same things on my other Ubuntu 8.04 installation, not virtually, and it works fine.

Can anyone tell me what is going on with the virtual one? How can I fix it?

The video card emulated by VirtualBox does not have the required extensions for Compiz to run, that is why desktop effects are not working when Ubuntu is run inside VirtualBox but work fine when it's not.

If you're looking for an easy way to run Ubuntu with Compiz on your notebook, I can recommend you have a try at wubi: http://wubi-installer.org/

Cheers,

Nicolas

I suggest you to install Ubuntu NOT using Wubi.

Installing Ubuntu using Wubi make Ubuntu less robust and all problems that you will have to Windows can be affect your Ubuntu partition file.

I strongly suggest you to install Ubuntu+Windows in dual mode creating a real Ubuntu ext3 partition.
In this mode you can use Ubuntu and Windows ad usual and then using installed Ubuntu you can save or repair damaged (due viruses or other issue) Windows partitions data.

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall

Is very easy to install, if you need info please ask.

Thank you
