Do you have a lot of games or files on your computer?
How much memory do you have?
Does your computer run any other software other than Linux?

I make this suggestions assuming that you know somehow that compiz is the problem.
Type Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to escape from X. It may respawn several times. Just insist until X desists to respawn. Then, login in non-graphical environment and uninstall compiz.
sudo apt-get remove compiz*.

I have had this problem, not solved yet. See 32073. I do not have games, except what is in Ubuntu. If I do not get a solution, I am preparing to wipe it out and start again with 7.10, which was OK!!

Can you help with this problem?
