linux will not boot

it loads the kernel and the rectangle goes back and forth like 20 times then when it tries to load the bar all the way, it gets stuck at the third one. my graphics card is nvidia geforce 5200fx with a 3.06ghz processor the disk works fine on my friends computer.

i went into the text start mode and it said this is not a 8139C+ compatable chip, but it lept loadin and the last line it will load is BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 11 seconds [wirte+cd+rules:5955]

Do you wish to only run the live cd or install the system? The live cd may not be compatible with your laptop, however you can use the alternate cd to install ubuntu.

   i have a computer with linux on it ,but i have no software for it . was thinking of wiping it out and putting windows xp on it . Any suggestions ? maybe there is an online way i can create a bootable disk for linux
