open office files some time corrupted when save to network drive

Asked by RG

when I save an open office spreadsheet or document to my network drive the next time I try to open it I get a message saying it is corrupt. This happens often but not every time. This problem only surfaced when I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. This problem exists on two pc's: an i386 with a fresh install of 8.04 and an x64 machine that was upgraded from 7.10. The network drive is a Maxtor network drive that I'm accessing using Samba.

On local drives everything works fine.

Window Vista and Open Office work just fine with the documents of the Network Drive.

I'd really like to be able to continue using Ubuntu and Open Office to work with data on the Network Drive.

Thanks for the question.

Are the files corrupted for both WIndows and Ubuntu if you open them for read? Have those files solely been saved from the Ubuntu machine or also from the windows machine?

Thanks

usually I will edit this/these files from what ever operating system I happen to be using but I did run a test which I hope isolates it to Ubuntu.

While in Ubuntu I copied a good working version of this file with a "file copy" and then started to edit it. The first eight to ten edit/save/open worked with no problems. Then on the next attempt to open the file I get the message "The file 'file name' is corrupt and therefore cannot be opened. Should OpenOffice.org repair the file?"

I accept its offer to repair the file which is read-only at that point so has to be resaved under a new name. I then begin editing this new file. This time it took almost 20 iterations of editing/saving/re-opening the file but eventually it corrupts again. (this is a spreadsheet I'm testing with)

Oh don't think I answered your question . . . I'll update shortly when I reboot into Windows . . .

I don't know if it is related but another strange thing. If the first thing I try to open is an OpenOffice spreadsheet, document, etc on the network drive I'm prompted to enter credentials. If that fails I can double click a jpg in that same network folder which will open with no security prompts. After that I can open the OpenOffice objects without getting prompted for credentials.

Yes, I received the same "file is corrupt" message from OpenOffice on both Ubuntu and Windows.

I made an assumption in my initial post that 8.04 would still be using SAMBA to access the network drive. I'm using whatever the default mechanism Ubuntu installs.
