bring back k7 kernel

Asked by javroch

using edgy, i get video issues with the i386 kernel with dual-head support.. ordinarily i wouldn't necessarily think it was the kernel change; however, when i installed the fglrx driver it specifically said that i should make sure to have the correct kernel for my hardware.. and in dapper, on k7 kernel, it works perfectly.. what happens is, on the second monitor, the lower portion of the video gets cut off.. in any movie player, mplayer, totem, anything.. i believe that the kernel is the reason as nothing else i have tried other than going back to dapper k7 has worked to fix it.. i don't really see why the k7 kernel was discontinued in ubuntu anyway

Have you tried the -generic kernel for Edgy? That is what I use now with my Athlons and Athlon XPs. The only issue I had with a -generic kernel was my one system had a 1gb stick of Dell DDR that was perfectly fine, however the memory test would say it had issues and the kernel would give apci errors on cpu(0) and would eventually lock up with time. Other than that issue, I have gotten the same, if not better, performance on my machines with the -generic kernel. Just a thought.

the -generic kernel is the i386 kernel.. that is exactly the kernel i am having issues with.. i have an amd64.. which ideally would use the k7 kernel.. that is the proper architecture

for some reasion, they decided to discontinue the k7 kernel in edgy.. and i get a video issue, i believe because of this, as everything works perfectly in dapper with k7, but not with -generic / i386

The "generic" kernel is actually i586 but that's symantic. It wont be the "k7" optimization of the Dapper kernel or the new kernel not being for K7 affecting your issue. A lot changed from .15 to .17 of the kernel releases as with every other set of kernel releases. This problem will be caused by something that has changed in the kernel regarding video since .15 or the way the fglrx driver itself uses the kernel.

I would start a new bug about this issue stating that the fglrx driver feature that you're using doesn't work with the .17 kernel or take the issue to ATi directly as it's more likely something broken in their driver (knowing their driver quality).

i guess if i should decide to try edgy again some day, i will try and build ATI's provided drivers rather than use the ones provided in ubuntu's repositories.. although, it is still suspicious as i was having the exact same issues with the dapper -generic kernel before i installed the dapper k7 kernel instead. and now, with edgy's -generic kernel, i again have the issue.. perhaps, i'll try and build my own k7 kernel and see if it works, although i've never built a kernel before

I had the same issue with the video being cut off. I found that on a clean install of ubuntu it was all fine and working. But as soon as I updated, an xorg package was updated and I started to get the problem.

If you are able to afford a nvidia graphics card, do. As the driver for that does not make these issues happen in dual head mode.

i really do not believe that it's the driver. is there some way of finding out for sure? because it seems all too suspicious that it works in dapper, only after changing kernels to k7.. and edgy it doesn't work because i can't switch to k7.. i don't particularly see why the k7 kernel was discontinued in the first place

the k7 kernel I believe was discontinued, as all the kernels were combined into one generic one.

I spent ages searching for a solution to this problem a few months back and I ended up just coming to a dead end.

I think when this new kernel is installed it talks to the driver differently and this causes the issue. with the nvidia card & driver I have never had this problem.

well, i don't see how this bug can be marked answered.. it seems to me that the change from k7 to generic is what caused the issue as it worked before.. i don't see why a k7 kernel can't be made if it has been done in the past and there are issues with using the generic kernel.. it has been and will continue to keep me from installing edgy.. and possibly feisty as well and i'm sure i'm not the only one having these issues or others related to the switch

Technically this isn't a bug, it's a support ticket. We can only answer questions and support you to get things working with the packages that are available. If you think a new package should be created or that there is a bug with an existing package then you should file a bug:-

The appropriate place to do that for edgy is here:-

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bugs

For Dapper:-

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bugs

Can you help with this problem?
