Ubuntu 8.04 install failed, but update more or less completed; sound issues

Asked by Luke E.A. Lockhart

I ran the updater and I was told that the update failed and that my system might be unusable after the package-manager package wouldn't update. I haven't tried using that yet, but the system thinks it's running 8.04 and the only problem so far is the sound; it's highly distorted. I found a report of the sound issue from alpha testing; but I can't see anything about this installation issue.

Also, I have discovered that the package manager is indeed broken.
